Definition of Animals

Animals are a group of organisms classified in the kingdom Animalia or metazoa, are one of the various living things on earth. Other names are fauna and wildlife (or just animals).

Animals in the sense of modern systematics include only groups of multicellular cells (multicellular) and are organized in different functions (networks), so this group is also called histozoans. All animals are heterotrophic, meaning they do not make their own energy, but must take it from their surroundings.

Animal Characteristics

Animals have mobility, are responsive to external stimuli, grow to a certain size, require complex food and soft body tissues. The differences apply in general, of course there are defects. Each individual, both in unicellular animals and in multicellular animals, is a unit. Animals are organized, meaning that each part of the body is subordinate to the individual as a whole, either as part of a cell or as a whole cell. This is called the organismal concept, an important concept in biology.

In general, the following are the characteristics of animals:

  1. Animals are eukaryotic, multicellular, heterotrophic organisms. In contrast to autotrophic nutrition in plants, animals enter the finished organic material into their bodies by ingestion or eating other organisms, or by eating decomposed organic material.
  2. Animal cells do not have a cell wall that strongly supports the body, as in plants or fungi. The largest component of animal cells consists of the structural protein collagen.
  3. The uniqueness of other animals is the presence of two tissues that are responsible for impulse delivery and movement, namely nerve tissue and muscle tissue so that they can move actively.
  4. Most animals reproduce sexually, with diploid stages dominating their life cycle.
  5. Respiratory apparatus in animals varies depending on the place of life, some breathe with the lungs like cats, gills like fish, skin like worms, trachea like insects.
  6. Requires food to grow and survive.
  7. Having no sense of thought.
  8. Can be controlled for humans (pets / circus).
  9. Life can end (die)
